Following the fall of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic had risen to a prominent power in the Mediterranean with allies along the basin. However, Rome's largest obstacle to its dominance was Carthage. Following three wars with Carthage, Rome eventually sacked the city of Carthage in 146 B.C. (or 608 by Roman reckoning) leading to further dominance of the Mediterranean by Rome.
The Roman Republic spread to Hispania, Greece, Carthage, Egypt, Palestine and Gaul. Caesar's Civil War from 49 - 45 B.C. eventually lead to the fall of the Republic and the establishment of the Roman Empire in 27 B.C..
During the Roman Empire period, Rome spread further North onto the Isle of Britannia, most of the Balkans, Little Asia as well as Mesopotamia. By 117 A.D., Rome had personal control over its large territorial claim before its eventually decline.
Internal conflicts, rise of peoples against the Empire as well as the large extent of the Empire eventually lead to the split of the Empire in 285 A.D. between the Eastern and Western Roman Empire. Though, officially until 476 A.D., both was considered to be part of the same Roman Empire, when the Western Roman Empire eventually collapsed.
The Byzantine Empire following the Eastern Roman Empire was considered to be the Roman Empire until its end in 1453 A.D., when the Turks finally seized Constantinople, which walls had stood for a thousand year.
Though, despite the Roman Empire's eventual collapse; Rome's political ideology, its conquests and culture can still be traced into today's structure of Europe and the world. Even phrases such as 'all roads lead to Rome' still remain, even if it hasn't been true for over 1500 years. And Rome did indeed have great boobs to go with that Empire.
Also, good thing that no ancient Romans will come across this; they'd be SCANDALIZED. It's been a long time since Latin class, but I think that (in the theatre, at least) red hair marked slaves.
