Following Spain's failure to conquer the Low Countries in the Eighty Years' War, the Dutch Republic was formed in 1581 as the United Provinces. During this period, which is known as the Dutch Golden Age, the United Provinces increased in wealth, due to its protection by Austria and the large migration of skilled workforce to Amsterdam.
The migration was largely due to the surrender of Antwerp in 1585, which forced the Protestant population to convert or leave. Antwerp was an important port in the late 16th century, but with Protestant workforces seeking lands free to practice their religion, they moved north to Amsterdam. Amsterdam, a small port in 1585, grew quickly in size and importance and by 1630, Amsterdam was the wealthiest city in the world.
In 1602, the Dutch East India Company was established, the first of its kind, financed by the first modern stock exchange. Receiving monopoly on Asian trade, it became the world's largest commercial enterprise by the 17th century. The Bank of Amsterdam, established in 1609, was first true central bank.
In addition to dominating the trade between Europe and Asia, along with exclusive rights of trade with Japan, the Dutch dominated the trade between the European countries, such as shipping wine from France and Portugal to the Baltic lands and returned grain.
The Dutch remained successful, but slowly the rest of Europe began catching up with the Dutch. By the 18th century, the Dutch was a power among many. The Republic's finally blow came in 1795 when it was conquered by the First French Empire, and the Batavian Republic and ultimately the Kingdom of the Netherlands was established in its place. But those boobs are certainly as perfect as a lighthouse.
Finally, something for the Dutch. What I love about the Dutch is that its politicians can never use the phrase, 'our best days are ahead of us', because with a phrase like 'the Dutch Golden Age', it can never be.
There's still so much to see, it must be hard for SVip to make a choice.. So bad we would never see a soviet girl, as the USSR was born in 1917 and with it Russia was out of WWI.
