Historines: Danish Empire [Commission]

Historines: Danish Empire [Commission]
The Danes made their true mark on history during their invasion of Britain, which in turn lead to the establishment of a vassal kingdom under Denmark in what is today North East England. When the Danes realised that they could simply charge money for not pillaging cities, the Danes established the concept of Danegeld in England. However, the rise of the Anglo-Saxons on Britain eventually lead to the de-establishment of the vassal.

Denmark's true origins remains unknown, but today it remains the oldest uninterrupted monarchy in the world, which dates back to around the 9th century. In addition to their British vassal, Denmark established its mark around the Baltic, Scandinavia and the Far North such as Iceland and Greenland. In the 13th century, Denmark participated in the Northern Crusade of Estonia. The Battle of Lyndanisse (Tallinn) famously includes the mythological origin of the Danish flag, where it fell from the sky; though it is more likely the symbol used by the Danes as part of the crusade. But despite this, Denmark has used this flag since then and thus it remains the oldest state flag still in use. Even Tallinn today uses the Danish flag in its small Coat of Arms as well as the Danish Coat of Arms in its Coat of Arms.

Denmark's main rival was Sweden, who was bothered by Denmark's possession of Scania, which meant Denmark had total control of the entrance to the Baltic Sea. In fact, it would not only be Sweden which was bothered by this fact. But it is a common misconception that Scania used to be Swedish before it was Danish, but only has since Sweden's annexation of Scania in the 16th century, where Sweden performed ethnic cleansing of the area to ensure it to be 'Swedish', even if the territory today remains more Danish than Swedish.

Denmark lead the Kalmar Union from the 14th century to the 16th century, which meant Norway and Sweden were under the Danish monarch. Following the Stockholm Bloodbath, Sweden seceded from the Union and in turn the Union of Denmark-Norway was established, which gave Denmark direct control over Norway.

But Denmark's path from glory was marked with blunders of all kinds; from the 14th century to the First World War, Denmark would find itself making mistake after mistake, slowly losing its former size and glory to smarter war efforts. Siding with the First French Empire did not do Denmark any good. Its war effort in 1864 against Prussia and Austria would demonstate a new level of idiocy, when all the cards were face up on the table and yet Denmark always picked wrong. But despite this, if we ignore the German occupation in the 1940s, Denmark has never been the subject of a foreign country. At least not directly.

This is the final Historines commission from Svip by woot.

Mr.Grimm on
Well I among others did love the different sizes of breasts in all these commissions, I do miss Woots own work or different commissions, great final piece. (Was thinkin it'd be a girl on girl piece like espionage but this is nice too, if it is the final one)

Svip on
I think it was a good idea to end on my own country. *nods*

Djoser on
An era is over. I don't know what the future holds, but is the end of what, I think, was a prolific partnership.

Anon on
Is it really? I'm sad, but at the same time, I look back and I'm like "geez he sure got a lot of them." I imagine Woot must be swimming in a tub of Svip's money, Scrooge McDuck-style.

Senor Bacon on
Darn, I was liking these...
I would have liked to see up to WW 2, but I'm not the one paying for all this.

darkzephyre on
What will woot draw now? I can't come to this page and not expect history with boobs now. D:

Ulvrik on
i truly marvel you art and this commisson sent a good spin in my heart ^^
you have done a perfect history research and put good art as symbols for that!

the vikings bow for this :)

anon on
I really hope it is. I'm not saying I haven't enjoyed them, I would just love to see something different for a change. The guy that commissioned these practically bought woot at the rate these are going.

Anonymouse on
I don't know if it's just the perspective, but that duck looks ENORMOUS.

Jenora Feuer on
Ahh, yes, the Danegeld. "Nice city you got there. Be a shame if something were to... happen to it."

rtpoe on
Awww... Well, it's been a great series!

Do you suppose, perchance, that any of us could possibly commission further entries in the series?

Heliotroph on
I have to ask...approximately how much did Svip pay woot for all these commissions?

fireheart on
so does this mean there might be BE in the future?

Somebody on
Good ol' Denmark, my favorite of the WASP lands... after England, of course.

rosgof on
My my, is it really? It's been such a long series. I was starting to think it never would. XD Svip must be some kind of rich.

Svip on
I think you all for your kind comments about these commissions, but I certain you will enjoy woot's own stuff now! And by the way, it is only the last commission with woot. Trust me, I still got plenty of stuff waiting; just with other artists.

@P1gdude: I don't base my character descriptions upon Humon or any other's interpretation or personifications of countries. I read their history and decide from that!
